How to Make Idi Upma in 5 Minutes with Leftover Idlies? : Photo Tutorial

Hey everyone!

Today I'm going to share an easy photo tutorial on how to make idli upma! This recipe can be prepared in a matter of five minutes. You can either prepare this with fresh steaming idlies or even leftovers. I assure this will be one quickest and spiciest recipe that can be easily made even by kids!

I especially dedicate this recipe to working moms and bachelors! :)

Ingredients:

  • Idlies, 4
  • Mustard seeds, 1/2 teaspoon
  • Split black gram (Urad dal/Ulundhu), 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dried red chillies, 4
  • Turmeric powder, 1/4 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves, 10 nos
  • Oil, 5 teaspoons
  • Salt, two pinches

Procedure:

Scramble the idlies into small pieces with your hands. Make sure not to mash them. They should be in small bits. No need to slice or chop.

Heat oil in a pan. Temper the mustard seeds, ural dal and dried (small) red chillies until they splutter. Now put in the curry leaves and 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder. Soon after this step, put in the scramble idlies and fry for a minute until they catch the heat!

Spicy idly upma is ready to be served! You can serve it either with coconut chutney or any other chutney you prefer.

Notes :

  • This makes an easy breakfast since you can prepare it in minutes! It also tastes great.
  • Always make sure to use well cooked idlies that are not sour. You can use freshly cooked or refrigerated idlies for best results! If they aren't fresh, the recipe won't taste good.
  • You can adjust red chillies according to your taste! If you prefer a very spicy recipe, a pinch of chilly powder can be added.
  • You can garnish this recipe quickly with coriander to get a nice aroma!
  • You can add boiled veggies like carrots, beans and cauli flower to this recipe to make it look more colorful and delicious. Your kids will love it that way! If not boiled, chop the veggies very thinly and fry them before adding the idlies.

Do try this at home and don't forget to share with me your comments! :) If you've any request for a recipe, feel free to let me know. I shall try it at my home and share a tutorial of the same!
